About Us

Mel Sorkowitz, Sondra Sorkowitz, Elissa Sorkowitz Lejeune and Bob Scheppske bring to you a combination of unique backgrounds.

Mel SorkowitzMel Sorkowitz did his graduate work at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wis., where he received his master’s degree in Audiology. Upon graduation, he became the Director of Audiology at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, Penn. Because Audiology was a relatively young profession, he became an important resource for the ear, nose and throat specialists. It soon became apparent to Mel and his wife, Sondra, a graduate of the George Washington University in Business Education, that the hearing aid field needed a new direction. They incorporated Audiological Consultants, Inc. of Pennsylvania in 1969 and grew to seven privately owned offices serving the hearing impaired in the Greater Philadelphia area.

Elissa SorkowitzIn 1972, Mel made a movie, “Hearing Aids, How to Fit Them,” and won an award that year for the most important contribution for medicine and surgery through the field of cinematography. He became presenter and guest lecturer for hearing aid manufacturers’ meetings and otolaryngoligists conventions.

The hearing aid field was changing rapidly. Audiologists and otologists could now dispense hearing aids where prior to 1978, it was considered unethical to do so. From 1978 to 1984, Mel and Sondra owned and operated manufacturing facilities in both Colorado Springs, Colo., and Los Angeles, Calif.

When the Au.D., Doctor of Audiology, degree was offered, Mel once again began his study toward that degree. In 2003, he received a Professional Leadership Award in recognition of his “Perseverance and strength as a pioneer in hearing aid dispensing by audiologists, as well as continued, joyful dedication to leading the audiology profession to new horizons.”

Mel is an expert in measuring hearing impairment and recognizing when a medical referral is in order as opposed to a hearing aid fitting. Elissa and Bob, both Hearing Aid Specialists who are Board Certified, have over 20 years of experience in working “hands on” with their patients in our well-equipped offices or in the privacy of your own homes, when necessary. Because they attend extensive classes and seminars at the manufacturing level, they bring a complete understanding of the technical instruments, as well as their ability to communicate with each and every patient is another reason why The Royal Palm Hearing Aid Centers are so successful and are known as “The Professionals You Can Trust.”
